Organize Your Desktop

Q: My desktop is getting crowded. How can I take some of my programs and put them into a separate folder?

A: The point of desktop icons is to make computing easier. Icons create easy access to applications. If your desktop is cluttered, it defeats the whole purpose. There are several methods to organizing your desktop. Find one solution, or incorporate aspects of several solutions to customize a desktop that fits your computing needs.

Desktop icons are shortcuts to applications. It's helpful to have frequently used applications ready to launch with a click of the mouse. If you have shortcut icons for seldom-used applications, create a folder on the desktop to organize them.

  1. Right-click on your desktop.
  2. Click on New.
  3. Click on Folder.
  4. Drag icons into the folder.

These seldom-used icons are organized into one folder, which greatly reduces clutter. Launch an application by opening the folder and clicking the appropriate icon. Create as many desktop folders as you need to further organize your applications.

An easier trick to opening icons within a folder is to drag the folder to your toolbar. Pull it to the end of the bar and click on the >>. A menu will pop up, listing the folder's contents. There is no need to reduce or shut down running applications to see the desktop in order to launch. Just click an item on the pop-up menu.

QuickLaunch is a toolbar that comes with Windows. Add these shortcut icons to your taskbar for quick launching. They're tiny and won't take a lot of space. QuickLaunch is a great place to house your most frequently used applications, thus removing the icon from the desktop.
